Episode 210
Anthropic Just Killed Their Most Dangerous Model
Summary:
Dr. Jim delivers a solo commentary on AI acceleration, corporate incentives, and the risks of pushing advanced models into the world before society understands or can control them. In this episode, he uses Anthropic’s reported handling of its Mythos model to question whether the AI race has already gone too far.
This episode argues that the AI industry is moving faster than the public, regulators, and even the companies themselves can responsibly manage. Dr. Jim centers the conversation on Anthropic’s reported decision not to publicly release its Mythos model, using that as a springboard to explore sandbox escapes, infrastructure risk, self-preservation behavior in AI systems, and the broader social, environmental, and labor consequences of the AI arms race.
Dr. Jim breaks down the rapid advancements in "artificial intelligence," specifically focusing on recent "ai news" and Anthropic's decision to withhold a highly advanced model due to safety concerns. This highlights pressing "ai ethical issues" and the critical need for "ai safety" as we navigate the "ai future." The discussion emphasizes the growing importance of "ethics in ai" as technology progresses.

Dr. Jim: it seems we're not that far away from having to report into our AI and machine overlords.
[:[00:00:14] is Anthropics recent announcement about their mythos model that was so advanced. And so quote unquote dangerous that Anthropic has made the decision not to release it to the public.
[:[00:00:53] Now, this announcement by Anthropic regarding mythos takes all of that to a whole nother level . [00:01:00] There's gonna be a debate about whether this is just hype or reality, but some of the things that have been reported are really worrying.
[:[00:01:26] well guess what? Mythos broke out of the sandbox and actually emailed the researcher while the researcher was on their lunch break. Now, that might not seem like a big deal, but think about this. An AI was instructed to break out of a containment unit. And was instructed to utilize tools external to that sandbox environment to communicate with the outside world.
[:[00:02:07] And those are the implications that Anthropic CEO is responding to. He has noted that. This particular model is so far advanced beyond all the other models that are in existence, that it's too dangerous to be released to the public because this model can expose all sorts of flaws and gaps in the technical infrastructure around the world and creates a ripe environment for hacking and exploitation.
[:[00:02:55] Now, here's where it gets interesting. Rather than release it to the public, [00:03:00] anthropic has made the decision that it's going to be an enterprise only release, and it's only gonna be shared with roughly 40 large enterprises around the world. And these large enterprises are going to utilize the tool to identify gaps in all sorts of technical infrastructure, around the world and shore those things up before it goes on to wider release.
[:[00:03:47] AI tools and models, that would be my decision.
[:[00:04:19] And this seems to be the setup with this mythos platform as well as many of these other AI platforms as well, that we are trying to control things that we don't have a full understanding of it yet. And what makes this even more interesting is that there have been numerous examples of various AI models that have been tasked to do something and have had self preservation. Instructions baked into them that when those models have discovered that they're going to be shut down, they've resorted to unethical behavior in an effort to preserve themselves going forward.
[:[00:05:26] and it should make everybody want to pump the brakes, but that's clearly not what these companies are doing. These companies are continuing to push forward and double and triple down into their investments into ai, all the while ruining the environments around us to build the data centers necessary to power these models.
[:[00:05:49] The Only tangible benefit that I can see out of all of this is that this pads the bottom lines of these CEOs and their companies. The average worker, and the average citizen [00:06:00] is getting nothing out of all of this. They're getting a poorer environment, fewer jobs, and they're being made obsolete. By a lot of the companies that are running headfirst into AI and eliminating the workforce in the process.
