Episode 249

Why Tucker's Distance From Trump Signals Something Bigger

Summary:

Dr. Jim argues that there is a civil war happening inside Republican circles, but not all of the players are making the same move.

Some right-wing commentators are simply trying to rebrand before the MAGA gravy train crashes. But Tucker Carlson, according to Dr. Jim, is doing something more dangerous. By distancing himself from the Republican Party, questioning U.S. support for Israel, apologizing for misleading people, and positioning himself as a disillusioned truth-teller, Tucker may be laying the groundwork for a future presidential run.

The core warning: Tucker is not changing his ideology. He is trying to build a broader coalition that reaches across the far right and parts of the far left by exploiting shared antisemitism, Islamophobia, populist resentment, and refusal to center race as the core issue.

[00:00:20] Now, a lot of what you see, you can chalk up to the typical grifter pivot. In the cases of Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, Ben Shapiro, they're starting to realize that their gravy train is about to run out, and MAGA is imploding left and right. So now it makes sense for them to pivot back to some version of the center and wait for the next shiny object to come along so that they could pivot in support of that. That's the game that's being played there. But there's one particular person that I want you to pay attention to, who bears watching. Check these clips out, [00:01:00] and I'll be right back

[:

[00:01:19] It's not possible to vote for people like that, and I'm not going to. And I think I voted Republican my entire life. I worked at Fox News, at CNN- Right ... MSNBC. I, I've been a, a consistent defender for 35 years of the Republican Party. I mean, very consistent defender. But there's no defending this because it's immoral, and it's exactly the opposite of what a political party in a democracy is charged with doing, which is representing its own voters, its own citizens, its own nation, and they're not doing that.

[:

[00:01:50] You and I and everyone else who supported him, you wrote speeches for him, I campaigned for him, w- we're implicated in this for sure. Yes. It's not enough to say, "Well, [00:02:00] I changed my mind," or like, "Oh, this is bad, I'm out." It's like in s- very small ways, but in real ways, you and me and millions of people like us are the reason this is happening right now. I do think it's like a moment to wrestle with our own consciences. Uh, you know, we'll be tormented by it for a long time. I will be. And, and I want to say I'm sorry for misleading people and, and it was not intentional. That's all I'll say. But anyway, but the question does present itself immediately, like, what is this?

[:

[00:02:42] I've outperformed my character a lot. I don't, don't have especially high character, right? But, you know, you try to, whatever, you try your best. But, um, but what, what, what was this? Was this always the plan?

[:

[00:02:58] KKKaroline: Be funny. It'll be [00:03:00] entertaining. There will be some shots fired tonight

[:

[00:03:02] Hours before the chaos, Karoline Leavitt told America to watch tonight because Donald Trump would bring the heat, and there would be shots fired. Then suddenly, real shots were fired near the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

[:

[00:03:28] American Christians need to reassess their support for Israel, and they need to do it on a number of different grounds. But the very first one is the most obvious one. Can you support a country that allows that kind of behavior, that has a lot of people who hate what you believe in and hate you for believing it, and that's demonstrable, and that has used your tax dollars to blow up Christian churches and shoot Christian clergy, a country in which Christian clergy are spit on as [00:04:00] they walk outside?

[:

[00:04:20] Does that make sense? That's the second order conversation, but the first order conversation is how could you ever support a government that mocks your values as aggressively as the government of Israel does?

[:

[00:04:33] Dr. Jim: That's from Tucker Carlson, now, those are interesting, and they're interesting on several fronts, and you've seen other prominent people within Republican circles make similar moves. You saw Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie do and say similar things, supposedly breaking away from the Republican Party. But let's understand what that means. When they say they're breaking away from the Republican Party, that just means that they're [00:05:00] going their own route while holding the same beliefs. This isn't a rejection of the Republican Party's ideology, and that ideology is one that's firmly rooted in supporting white Christian nationalist and white supremacist views.

[:

[00:05:37] You saw Tucker Carlson in the lead up to 2024 and during the entire Trump regime, do whatever it takes to prop up the regime to advance his agenda. Up to and including parroting Russian talking points.

[:

[00:05:55] Vladimir Putin : The US started the war and we used force in order to stop it.

[:

[00:06:04] Vladimir Putin : Ukrainian people have become hostages of their Western masters.

[:

[00:06:12] Vladimir Putin : The US were training on the future theater of military actions by owning biological laboratories in Ukraine.

[:

[00:06:25] Vladimir Putin : Western countries were setting military bases on our border.

[:

[00:06:30] They don't want a hostile government next door.

[:

[00:06:36] Tucker Carlson: Getting Ukraine to join NATO was the key to inciting war with Russia.

[:

[00:06:45] Tucker Carlson: The Biden administration wanted all along a regime change war against Russia.

[:

[00:06:53] Tucker Carlson: So it's not Vladimir Putin who's getting punished, it's American citizens. It's you.

[:

[00:07:03] Tucker Carlson: Gas prices are already the highest they have ever been in history. So the price of natural gas and the price of electricity and food and everything else you buy.

[:

[00:07:17] Dr. Jim: What that indicates to you is that Tucker Carlson has no moral center. He is the biggest opportunist out of a group of opportunists that exist on the right wing. But what's this pivot away from the Republican Party actually signal? And that's where you have to pay attention to that clip where Carlson is raising questions about the state of Israel That's a presidential play, and it's a presidential play that's designed for twenty thirty-two, not twenty twenty-eight. Here's what I mean.

[:

[00:08:18] He is all about that life. And the reason why his comments about Israel are worth paying attention to is because there is nothing that unites the far right and far left better than their mutual hatred of the State of Israel, antisemitism, and Islamophobia.

[:

[00:09:16] When you think about the far left, you saw their antisemitism and their anti-Jewish hate bubble up over the last 10 years. And the fact of the matter is that a lot of the things that the far left believes are very closely aligned to what the far right believes. I've talked before about how the political horseshoe, where the poles of the far right and the far left are much closer together than those of us who are on the moderate end of either spectrum.

[:

[00:10:06] Well, it makes sense in a very simple way. The far left likes to constantly talk about the up versus down struggle. There's a certain amount of that same populous rhetoric on the far right. Now, on the far right and the far left, they refuse to talk about race as the central issue that is the cause of most of the problems that exist today. So there is a unifying component of both sides, and Tucker is speaking to those elements on the left, as well as the disaffected elements that believe the same things on the right. So when you look at the common thread that binds the far left and far right together, you have an insistence to ignore race as a problem.

[:

[00:11:12] So while we look at all of this infighting on the right, - Most of it we can view as a marketing exercise and a rebranding exercise. Most of the people that are arguing and debating about what's the right path and whether Trump has lost his way, it's just their attempt to retrench themselves in a different position so that they have a livelihood when this all comes crumbling down.

[:

[00:12:12] We are walking into a pretty rough sea in the post-2028 era, which makes it prime pickings and a prime opportunity for a far-right populist campaign to get traction built on support from not only fringe far-right groups, but groups on the far left that believe the same things.
