Episode 189

Your Data, Their Model: The Surveillance State Playbook

Summary:

Dr. Jim breaks down the collision of AI, defense policy, and authoritarian impulse—arguing that removing “guardrails” from frontier models is less about security and more about expanding power through surveillance and automated violence.

This episode centers on a chilling premise: senior defense leadership allegedly pushing to use frontier AI for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons—and punishing companies that won’t comply. Dr. Jim uses the Anthropic standoff as the springboard to map a broader warning: the surveillance state is already here, and AI accelerates it.

Chapters:

00:00 – The core warning: autonomous killing + who’s holding the keys

03:18 – Anthropic vs DoD: the guardrails dispute, explained

06:35 – Why regimes want “enemy of the state” narratives + AI tools

11:10 – Pentagon surveillance capabilities + the “you can’t hide heartbeat” point

13:21 – Buying decisions + policy demands + billionaire accountability

Dr. Jim: In what universe would it seem like it's a good idea to give a perpetually drunk, racist and rapist access to technology that allows him to kill anyone and everyone at the push of a button?

[:

[00:00:16] not being able to step away from a drink in front of him is demanding that anthropic allow him to do.

[:

[00:00:35] Doug Wilson is the pastor of a major evangelical church that is deeply embedded within this regime, and among the many things that he is in favor of, he's certainly in favor of eliminating the right to vote for women.

[:

[00:00:52] Pamela Brown : So you just think they're meant to have babies. That's it. They're just a vessel.

[:

[00:01:07] Eternal souls.

[:

[00:01:11] Doug Wilson : Good for you.

[:

[00:01:13] for you?

[:

[00:01:15] Wilson says, in his vision of a Christian society, women as individuals shouldn't be able to vote.

[:

[00:01:25] Doug Wilson : And this is the thing. They're gonna be five years from now, friends of pedophiles as pedophiles. I'm a friend of pedophiles, as a preacher of the gospel that will bring them out of that grotesque sin, right?

[:

[00:01:41] Doug Wilson : Yeah. Yeah. I conducted the marriage ceremony, but I I did do that. But I didn't set them up. I didn't arrange it for it. I didn't all the things you hear online that I did in that situation.

[:

[00:01:56] Doug Wilson : Be because it was legal.

[:

[00:02:21] Pastors are helping people. I've sometimes joked that. A pastor's job is to watch people try to wreck their lives for a living where they make bad decisions and then they repent and they come back. You do what you can to help them in that situation. Not only I, but an Idaho judge believed that marriage was a good step for that young man to take.

[:

[00:02:48] Dr. Jim: when you think about how Pete Hegseth is wired, and when you think about why would someone like Pete Hegseth want the option of a fully autonomous death machine [00:03:00] enabled by ai?

[:

[00:03:18] And Pete Hegseth is demanding that anthropic take off the guardrails that allows their AI tools to be used for mass surveillance and also for fully autonomous weapons. To Anthropics credit, their CEO has pushed back on these guardrails and had this to say.

[:

[00:03:58] We have not yet [00:04:00] received direct communications from the Department of Defense or the White House on the status of our negotiations. We've tried in good faith to reach an agreement. With the Department of Defense, making it clear that we support all lawful uses of AI for national security. Aside from the two narrow exceptions above, to the best of our knowledge, these exceptions have not affected a single government mission.

[:

[00:04:41] The statement for philanthropic goes on to say more, but that's the gist of it. And the big thing that we have to understand about the statement is that this is a tech founder, surprisingly holding firm to the core values and principles that the company is founded on

[:

[00:05:27] A perfect example is Elon Musk, currently the richest man in the world who is constantly arguing that the billionaire class needs to be left alone so that they can build their tech utopia, even if it means that millions of people. Have to die or live miserable lives as a result of them pursuing more and more wealth. Now, keep in mind, Elon Musk, along with all of the other tech billionaires that are involved in AI, have gladly handed over their AI models without guardrails to the US government.

[:

[00:06:20] Gleefully lobbing bombs at countries all over the world to distract attention away from the strong likelihood that he's a child rapist. So that kind of tracks that Elon Musk AI would be welcomed in this regime.

[:

[00:06:56] and keep in mind, this is a regime that is [00:07:00] actively painting the narrative that anyone that opposes a regime is an enemy of the state. So it stands to reason that this regime would gladly push the button and exterminate their political and ideological opponents in an effort to paint them as terrorists and eliminate them from the timeline.

[:

[00:07:21] Let's understand that all of these companies domestically and internationally are deploying technologies that governments are already using to surveil their people.

[:

[00:07:59] And that [00:08:00] sits at the intersection of computer vision and machine learning techniques that's all coming from research that was done at Carnegie Mellon in 2022 through their Robotics Institute. This is just one example of a technology application that AI has been applied to that allows for surveillance of private citizens in their homes.

[:

[00:09:04] Oracle has been embedded within the Chinese surveillance state for a while, and Ellison often speaks of how in his grand vision, every citizen will be monitored. Check this out and I'll be right back.

[:

[00:09:36] How do you take advantage of these incredible ai, AI models and the first thing a country needs to do? Is to unify all of their data so it can be consumed and used by the AI model. You have to take all of your healthcare data, your diagnostic data, your electronic health records, your [00:10:00] genomic data, and you know, in the Middle East, uh, in the UAE for example, they, they're incredibly rich in data.

[:

[00:10:39] So that's the, that's the big step. That's kind of the missing link. We need to unify all of the national data, put it into a database where it's easily consumable by the AI model, and then ask whatever question you like.

[:

[00:11:10] One of the other surveillance technology pieces that's already been deployed is a Pentagon project called Project Jetson, and in Project Jetson, the Pentagon has. Deployed a laser technology that can identify and surveil people from a distance roughly 200 meters away by their heartbeat. Now, when you're talking about resisting this fascist regime, the first line of defense is trying to hide your identity by wearing masks and all sorts of things that obstruct your view.

[:

[00:11:53] These are just a few examples of the surveillance state that's already in action. And the [00:12:00] argument that the defense department is making through Pete, he is that that's not enough to keep America safe. And that's why they need all of these AI models to not have guardrails so that they can surveil the, the population to a greater degree beyond what's already happening.

[:

[00:12:46] What that means for the average citizen is that we are moving faster and faster towards a complete surveillance state, and we need to understand that our concept of living in a free society if it exists [00:13:00] to any great degree anymore, is gonna be completely gone if this takes root. And what that means is that we need to be selecting people and putting them in positions of power that are committed to dismantling the entire technocracy and destroying the billionaire class so that they can no longer move forward with anything like this.

[:

[00:14:00] but going forward, we need to make sure that elected officials are committing to. Putting guardrails around any and every AI application that's out there, including what the defense department is doing, and we need to also make sure that every one of these billionaires who handed over their technology to the government without guardrails, need to pay a financial price for that recklessness.

[:

[00:14:51] That's the least we can do . At a minimum, when we think about AI policy and how we should move forward with ai, we need to consider not only the [00:15:00] environmental impact, but also the ideology that these billionaire AI funders are pushing forward in their effort to create their technocratic utopia where they are in charge and we are nothing but cogs in their machine.
